When my husband and I got married eight years ago, I was both excited and a bit nervous because we had known each other for only six months. But over time, our love grew stronger, and I’m blessed with a family that has been nothing but supportive and caring. Despite the common societal pressure, my in-laws have always embraced the belief that 'Rezeki dari Allah' comes in its own time, never pushing us about starting a family. As we now prepare to take the next step in our journey with IVF, I’m reflecting on how far we’ve come and the lessons we’ve learned about love, patience, and faith.
My first fertility journey kicked off in 2020—yup, right smack in the middle of the COVID-19 era. Back then, talking about fertility and family planning in Malaysia was almost like hunting for a needle in a haystack. The info was super limited, and it felt like there was this huge silence around it. I wish I knew more after I got married: what to expect in a fertility journey in Malaysia, where to find good fertility centers, and the real deal on IUI and IVF here. But back then, it was like these topics were hidden under a pile of 'taboo.' Most useful advice was from overseas—our community wasn’t quite ready to talk openly about it yet.
Instead, this is what I usually heard: 'You kena pergi kampung cari bidan, kasi urut rahim, takut dah jatuh.' 'Makan ubat tradisional dan jamu ni, bagus untuk kesuburan.' 'Tidur dalam posisi ni, gerenti dapat baby!' 'Kena rajin buat, honeymoon lagi!' 'Jangan malas sangat atas katil.' 'Pergi doktor, buat pap smear, check rahim.'
Out of all those myths and advice, the one response that truly matters—and that we should pay attention to—is:
'After 6-12 months of trying, if you’re still not pregnant, it’s time to see a fertility specialist and do a full check-up.'
It’s time we shift the conversation and break the stigma around fertility in Malaysia.
I hope my journey will shed some light on the bittersweet realities of trying to conceive (TTC) in Malaysia and serve as a helpful guide for other couples navigating the same path. May this blog be a source of comfort, insight, and encouragement for anyone searching for answers and reassurance in their own fertility journey. Remember, you’re not alone in this, and together, we can break the silence and support each other in finding hope, strength, and success.
